What is it?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The leopard (Panthera pardus<\/em>) is one of the five “big cats” in the genus Panthera<\/em> (along with lions, tigers, jaguars, and snow leopards). It is famous for its strength, stealth, and ability to thrive in almost any environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  • Weight:<\/strong> 30\u201390 kg (66\u2013198 lbs). Males are larger than females.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Length:<\/strong> 90\u2013190 cm (35\u201375 inches) plus a 60\u2013100 cm (24\u201340 inch) tail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Shoulder height:<\/strong> 45\u201380 cm (18\u201331 inches).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Coat:<\/strong> Golden-yellow to pale cream with black rosettes<\/strong> (broken circles with a darker center). Rosettes are unique to each leopard, like a fingerprint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

        The Great Climber<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Leopards are the best climbers<\/strong> among big cats. They:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Drag kills up trees<\/strong> to hide them from lions, hyenas, and wild dogs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Sleep on branches<\/strong> (safe from ground predators).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Carry prey heavier than themselves<\/strong> (up to 3 times their weight) into trees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Interesting Facts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          1. The silent stalker:<\/strong> Leopards are so stealthy that they can walk without making a sound. They pad the ground with their paws, and their loose shoulder blades absorb noise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Strength beyond size:<\/strong> A leopard can carry a 180 kg (400 lb) antelope<\/strong> up a vertical tree trunk. This requires the strength of about 10 adult humans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. “Panther” is not a species:<\/strong> Black panthers are just leopards (or jaguars) with melanism. In good light, their rosettes are still visible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. Extreme adaptability:<\/strong> Leopards survive in deserts (drinking water only once every 10 days), rainforests, snowy mountains, and even the edges of Mumbai, India (where they hunt stray dogs at night).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          5. Masters of disguise:<\/strong> Their rosettes act as “disruptive coloration” \u2013 the pattern breaks up their outline, making them invisible in dappled sunlight and shadows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          6. Hissing roar:<\/strong> Leopards can roar (unlike snow leopards), but their roar sounds more like a raspy, sawing cough<\/strong> repeated several times. They also make a sound called “sawing” to announce territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          7. Fast but not for long:<\/strong> They sprint at 55\u201360 km\/h (35\u201337 mph)<\/strong> but only for 100\u2013200 meters. They rely on surprise, not endurance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          8. Danger to humans?<\/strong> Leopards rarely attack people. However, when injured, old, or unable to hunt wild prey, they can become man-eaters<\/strong>. The most famous was the “Panar Leopard” (India, early 1900s) \u2013 killed over 400 people. But such cases are extremely rare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
